In-Situ Cap (ISC) construction is an emerging technology used for the remediation of submerged contaminated soils. ISC's are built in low energy marine environments by layering a combination of clean sand or gravel with geo-textile fabric. The ISC prevents the resuspension of contaminated sediments, reducing the flux of dissolved chemicals back into the water column. The sediment cap acts as a barrier to aquatic organisms which have the potential to come in contact with the contaminated layer, reducing the 'bio-accumulation' of harmful substances.
