TRANSBAY POWER CABLE SURVEY

San Francisco, San Pablo & Suisun Bays

Client: Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey

Alpine Ocean employed DMS to provide hydrographic survey data and vibracore sediment samplingsupport for the installation of a submerged D/C power cable to run from Pittsburg to South San Francisco. DMS provided the marine vessels and support platforms necessary for all equipment & collection devices during the winter months of 2006-2007. Working with the survey crew and dive team to ensure quality assurance and control for all actions conducted, the R/V Lakota conducted a hydrographic survey of the San Francisco Bay including Side Scan imagery and Magnetometer data.
After the completion of the survey work, DMS was responsible for acquiring 150 sediment core samples along the cable route. The R/V Lakota was used to take the bulk of the core samples with a penetration depth of 15 feet utilizing a 6 inch head and 4 inch core diameter. The R/V Lakota took core samples in the roughs conditions with 20 to 40 knot wind speeds and 7 knot currents. Cores were taken in 20 to 200 feet of water depth. In certain locations in which the there was a need for 20 foot Vibracore depths barge with a mounted crane were used.
