Job Description for Marine Scientist

Dixon Marine Services, Inc. (DMS) is an oceanographic and wetland restoration firm specializing in wetland habitat restoration, water quality monitoring, and sediment investigation. DMS has an immediate opening for a Marine Scientist. 


DMS  has an exciting opportunity for a marine scientist to lead DMS Oceanographic Services Projects located in California, Oregon, Washington , Idaho and Montana. The position will be either be based in California or the Northwest.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Manage and develop the Oceanographic services offered at DMS 
  • Manage and assist with projects including sediment investigations, water quality programs and hydrographic flow studies
  • Author / co-author sampling and analysis plans, field data results and analytic results to define the nature and extent of environmental conditions
  • Conduct field data collection, analysis and reporting
  • Use field equipment including data sondes, sediment sampling tools, vibracore, underwater video equipment and flow meters
  • Benthic organism sampling programs 
  • Use navigational tools for determining the exact location of project related targets 
  • Manage Projects, build client relationships, and prepare proposals

Job Qualifications:
  • BS or MS in Oceanography, Marine Biology Environmental Sciences or related field
  • At least 5 years relevant Northwest and/or California experience
  • Experience with relevant local , regional and federal regulations including ESA, CWA and NEPA
  • Strong Technical writing skills
  • Familiarity with freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats
  • Experience with aquatic invertebrate sampling and identification
  • Fish population sampling methodologies and working knowledge of salmonid life histories 
  • Previous experience with sampling program design and implementation
  • Treatability experience for impacted sediments
  • Ability to perform outdoor work for long hours in inclement weather
  • Ability to work on boats
  • Ability to travel for extended periods across California and the Northwest
  • Strong computer skills ( Excel/ Word/Power Point and Microsoft Project )

Preferred Skills:
  • Strong field sampling skill set
  • HAZWOPER training 
  • Survey skills and GPS Operation
  • Working knowledge of Hypack
  • Experience in wetland and stream bank restoration
  • Boat operating skills 
  • Sediment and erosion control training
